Beyond the Break

When Hurricane Helene struck western North Carolina in September 2024, Jason Whitley was serving with Transylvania County Emergency Services as part of the state’s ESF-2 emergency communications team, helping keep first responders connected as catastrophic flooding and widespread devastation unfolded. While working through the storm, he lost contact with his wife and young daughter after instructing them to shelter in their basement as two trees fell on their home. After four days on duty, he finally left to reach them, hiking for hours through washed-out roads, landslides, and fallen trees before safely evacuating his family.

In the weeks that followed Helene, Jason remained in the heart of recovery efforts. With roads destroyed, utilities down for over a week, and entire areas cut off, he worked alongside neighbors and family to clear debris, reopen access routes, and begin rebuilding their community. Even while dealing with damage to his own home, he continued serving in emergency communications, supporting the broader response across western North Carolina.

In early 2025, Jason faced another life-altering crisis when a bacterial infection led to severe sepsis, requiring a medically induced coma and emergency airlift to Chapel Hill. He ultimately lost several fingers, half of left foot and his right leg below the knee. Throughout his recovery, his Emergency Management family stayed by his side, with colleagues rotating through his hospital room until his family could arrive. Today, Jason is working hard to get back in service, training the next generation of communications specialists and continuing a career defined by resilience, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to others.
